49ers' John Lynch: Trade Deadline Additions Must Be Earned

As the San Francisco 49ers gear up for a season brimming with Super Bowl aspirations, general manager John Lynch has sent a clear message to his roster: if you want reinforcements, go earn them. In a revealing interview with The San Francisco Standard, Lynch hinted that the team's performance over the first two months of the 2026 campaign could dictate whether the front office makes a splash before the Nov. 10 trade deadline. 'That's not like a charge to a team, Hey, you want us to keep adding? Go earn it,' Lynch said. 'But that's just the reality of this league. Put yourself in position, then if it fits and the deal's right, then yeah.'

A History of Deadline Aggression

Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have never shied away from bold midseason moves. The acquisition of Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers in 2022—a deal that cost four draft picks—transformed the 49ers' offense and cemented McCaffrey as a cornerstone of their current era. Similarly, the addition of Emmanuel Sanders at the 2019 deadline proved pivotal in their run to Super Bowl LIV. 'I think our history shows we're not averse to that,' Lynch noted. 'But I do believe you have to put yourself in position to even have those conversations.'

Early Names on the Radar

While it's far too early to predict which players might become available, ESPN's Dan Graziano has already floated intriguing possibilities, including Las Vegas Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby and Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts. Pitts, however, has since signed a three-year, $54 million extension with Atlanta, making a midseason departure less likely. Yet if the Falcons stumble unexpectedly, Pitts could emerge as a tantalizing option for San Francisco, offering a dynamic complement to George Kittle. The 25-year-old hauled in 88 passes for 928 yards last season, and pairing him with Kittle would give Shanahan a nightmare matchup for defenses in multiple-tight-end sets.

The Maxx Crosby Factor

Crosby represents an entirely different level of ambition. The Raiders nearly traded him to Baltimore in March for two first-round picks, only for the Ravens to back out due to medical concerns. Crosby was reportedly furious, but he has since recommitted to Las Vegas. Still, the failed deal proved the Raiders have a price for their franchise pass rusher—and it's astronomical. If the Raiders struggle early and the 49ers determine that another elite edge rusher could elevate their defense to championship form, Crosby's name would be impossible to ignore. Pairing him with Nick Bosa would be the kind of aggressive, win-now gamble Lynch has executed before.

For now, the 49ers have ample time to evaluate their roster. The trade deadline falls on Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. PT, giving Lynch through Week 9 to assess whether his team has earned another major investment.
