Aaron Donald's Rams Return: Will He Play in Australia? Sean McVay Keeps Door Open

August 31, 2026 — The Los Angeles Rams have officially welcomed back one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history, Aaron Donald, and the football world is buzzing with one question: When will the future Hall of Famer take the field? As the Rams prepare for their season opener against the San Francisco 49ers in Sydney, Australia, head coach Sean McVay is keeping his cards close to the vest, but he hasn't ruled out the possibility of Donald making his season debut on the international stage.

McVay's Cautious Optimism

Speaking to reporters in his Sunday press conference, McVay emphasized a day-by-day approach to Donald's return. "I'm not going to talk about any sort of plans, it's going to be a day at a time for us," McVay said. "The first step was, alright, if you're coming back, let's do that, let's get you back on the practice field, let's get you acclimated to your teammates, to your coaches. And then we'll see what that ramp-up period looks like, whether or not he's available or whether or not we think it's best to play him in Australia."

The Rams' opener against the 49ers in Sydney is a marquee event, and having Donald on the field would be a massive boost. However, McVay made it clear that the decision will be based on what's best for the player and the team, not the spectacle. "I think the best way to do it is take it one day at a time," he added. "But, we're obviously excited to be able to have him back."

More Than Football: A Reunion of Legends

McVay's enthusiasm for Donald's return goes beyond X's and O's. The two have shared a remarkable journey, winning a Super Bowl together and building a legacy in Los Angeles. "It's way bigger than football," McVay said. "There's a lot of history. There's a lot of experiences that we've shared. A lot of love for each other's families. So, I know for him to want to be able to explore this and come back into the mix is a real credit to the special people that he's got a chance to be around, and that's his teammates, and that's obviously his coaches. And excited to start this journey. He's one of one."

Donald, a three-time AP Defensive Player of the Year, is widely regarded as the most dominant interior defender of his generation. His return instantly elevates the Rams' defense, which struggled at times last season without his presence. The question now is how quickly he can return to game shape after an extended absence.

The Road to Return

McVay provided some insight into what led to Donald's decision to rejoin the team. "I think he wanted to get to a point where he knows just from his previous experiences, alright, I want to be able to be there, be a part of the football team, and I think there were some things that he wanted to be able to work through — just in terms of his workouts and where he felt his body was before he could comfortably get to this spot," McVay explained. "And so, that was really what went into it."

The coach also highlighted the mutual understanding between him and Donald throughout the process. "He and I both kind of had an unspoken understanding like, once we get the roster down, where are you at with it? You don't owe us anything. And no matter what, there's a lot of love. We wanted to make sure that he felt good about doing that. He obviously is incredibly — his priority is with his family. And so when he does something, he does it all in. That's what led to being able to get it done today."

For Rams fans, the prospect of seeing Donald in the iconic blue and gold again is thrilling. As the team prepares for a challenging season, his presence could be the difference between a playoff run and a disappointing finish. Whether he suits up in Australia or waits a bit longer, one thing is certain: Aaron Donald is back, and the NFL is on notice.
