Jets Rookies D'Angelo Ponds and Kenyon Sadiq Battle Back from Injuries

As the New York Jets prepare for their regular-season opener against the Tennessee Titans on September 13, 2026, the spotlight falls on two of their most promising rookies: cornerback D'Angelo Ponds and tight end Kenyon Sadiq. Drafted with high expectations in the first and second rounds respectively, both players have been sidelined for most of training camp due to injuries. However, with the season now underway, the duo is making significant progress in their recovery, and their return could provide a much-needed boost to the Jets' roster.

Overcoming Adversity Together

Ponds, the 50th overall pick out of Indiana, suffered a calf strain during the first practice of training camp on July 29. What was initially thought to be a minor issue turned into a prolonged absence that kept him off the field for over a month. "It's been tough, I can't lie to you on that," Ponds admitted. "The longest I've ever been out. I didn't think it was going to be this long. But I'm ready now, ready to get back to it." His return to practice on Tuesday marked a significant milestone in his recovery, and he remains confident in his abilities. "I'm a confident guy," he added. "Playing that position, you have to be confident."

Sadiq, the 16th overall pick from Oregon, had a similar ordeal. After participating in the first three practices of camp, he was sidelined for nearly a month due to complications from a spring hernia operation. The talented tight end, who caught 51 passes for 560 yards and eight touchdowns last season with the Ducks, returned to practice last week and is optimistic about his chances of playing on Sunday. "I feel really good," Sadiq said. "I think I'll be involved for sure [Sunday]."

A Shared Journey to Recovery

One of the most compelling aspects of their recovery has been the mutual support they've provided each other. As two highly drafted players missing significant time, they found solace in rehabbing together. "Obviously we're behind, but there's no pressure," Sadiq explained. "We're trying to go out there and do what we've done our whole lives, which has gotten us to this point." Their camaraderie has been a source of strength, and now they are back on the practice field, eager to make an impact.

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, who initially downplayed Ponds' injury, has been cautiously optimistic about both players' progress. While Sadiq appears more likely to see action against the Titans, Ponds may need additional time to fully integrate into the defense. Nevertheless, the return of these two rookies injects energy and talent into a Jets squad aiming to compete in a tough AFC East division.

As reported by the Vulius NFL Analysis Desk, the Jets' investment in these young players reflects their commitment to building for the future while staying competitive in the present. With the season opener looming, all eyes will be on Ponds and Sadiq as they look to turn their arduous journey into on-field success. For fans and analysts alike, their progress will be a key storyline to monitor as the season unfolds.
