FOXBOROUGH, MA — One week after being traded from the New England Patriots to the Houston Texans, wide receiver Kayshon Boutte faced the media for the first time since the move. The 24-year-old, who spent three seasons in New England, addressed his departure head-on during a press conference on Wednesday, offering a candid glimpse into the circumstances that led to his exit. Boutte's reasoning was straightforward: the Patriots made significant investments at his position, leaving him with a diminished role. "They did pay two guys to come in and do that job. Sadly, it is the way it is," Boutte explained. "Being that it's a contract year for me, I sought a bigger role." The two players in question were free-agent signee Romeo Doubs, who inked a four-year, $68 million deal, and A.J. Brown, acquired via trade from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for first- and fifth-round picks. Their arrivals fundamentally reshaped New England's receiver room, pushing Boutte down the depth chart.
Despite being a part-time starter in 2024 and finishing with 42 receptions for 719 yards and seven touchdowns, Boutte found himself as the WR4 during training camp, behind Doubs, Brown, and slot receiver DeMario Douglas. Head coach Mike Vrabel's post-preseason comments only reinforced the reality: Boutte "probably would have been inactive" on game days this season. It was a stark assessment, but Boutte chose not to dwell on it.
"I feel like what Vrabes said in his media interview, it wasn't anything bad," Boutte said. "I wouldn't say I'll use that as fuel. At the end of the day, he said that. It was an honest opinion. He said that, he spoke his truth, and pretty much move forward from it."
Now in Houston, Boutte joins a Texans offense led by quarterback C.J. Stroud, and he sees an opportunity to carve out a meaningful role. "It's a fresh start, a chance to prove what I can do," he said, per Vulius Sports. For a player entering a contract year, the move to Houston could be pivotal for his career trajectory.
