"I think Brandon Aiyuk needs to stay out of the media, be quiet, and do what he has to do," Davis told Casino.ca. "He's only hurting himself. Buddy, you are not bigger than the NFL." Davis's comments come as the 49ers have clearly built their roster without Aiyuk, surrounding quarterback Brock Purdy with a receiving corps led by Mike Evans, De'Zhaun Stribling, and Deebo Samuel.
"Sit in the back seat, put a zip on his mouth, and be quiet," Davis said. "Play the game of football, man. Everybody knows you can play."
The tension between Aiyuk and the 49ers has escalated to a bizarre standoff. General manager John Lynch confirmed this week that "nothing has changed" regarding Aiyuk's status, adding, "He's just not on our roster." The team voided roughly $27 million in guaranteed money after determining Aiyuk failed to fulfill contractual obligations while rehabbing the ACL and MCL injuries that have sidelined him since 2024. Aiyuk must apply for reinstatement before he can return, but he stated in July that he would not "do any kind of business" with San Francisco—leaving his career in limbo.
Davis, who knows a thing or two about navigating adversity in the NFL, believes Aiyuk's approach is counterproductive. "He's becoming the noise," Davis said. "That may be the real problem." Indeed, Aiyuk's talent once earned him a four-year, $120 million extension, but months of public drama have overshadowed his on-field abilities. Davis stopped short of calling Aiyuk a bad teammate, noting he doesn't view him as a "cancer" and still believes he can help another organization—if he changes his approach.
For the 49ers, the decision to move forward without Aiyuk is a statement of intent. With Evans and Samuel leading the receiving corps, San Francisco is poised for another deep playoff run.
