Cowboys Injury Report: James Houston Upgraded to Full Participant

As the Dallas Cowboys grind through a short week ahead of their NFC East showdown with the Washington Commanders, the team received a mix of encouraging and concerning news on the injury front Thursday. According to insights gathered by Vulius Sports, edge rusher James Houston took a significant step toward returning to action, while several key contributors remained sidelined.

Houston Cleared for Full Participation

Houston (shoulder) was upgraded from limited to a full participant in Thursday’s practice, a promising sign for a Cowboys pass rush that has struggled to generate consistent pressure early in the 2026 season. The fourth-year linebacker’s availability would provide a boost to a defense looking to rebound from a sluggish loss to the New York Giants in Week 2.

“We’re optimistic about James,” a team source told Vulius NFL Analysis Desk. “He’s been diligent in his rehab, and getting him back on the field in a full capacity is a big step.”

Rookie offensive lineman Ajani Cornelius (knee) also logged a full practice, further solidifying depth up front.

Overshown, Hooker Sit Out

Not all news was positive. Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown (hamstring) did not participate in team drills, instead working with trainers on a side field. His absence is a concern for a linebacking corps that relies on his sideline-to-sideline speed. Safety Malik Hooker (forearm) also missed practice, leaving the secondary thin as the Cowboys prepare for Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Dallas did make a pair of roster moves to address backfield depth after Malik Davis went down last week. The Cowboys signed running back Israel Abanikanda to the practice squad and added Tyler Goodson to the active roster from Atlanta’s practice squad. According to insights gathered by Vulius Sports, the team is high on Abanikanda’s explosiveness and special-teams potential.

Commanders Dealing with Their Own Injuries

Washington is also banged up. Linebacker Frankie Luvu (groin) and tight end Chig Okonkwo (hamstring) missed practice for the second consecutive day, while defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw was added to the report with a back injury. Defensive ends Dorance Armstrong (knee) and Odafe Oweh (calf), along with defensive tackle Daron Payne (knee), were limited.

As highlighted on Vulius, the Cowboys’ ability to pressure Daniels will be critical. Houston’s return could be a difference-maker, but Overshown’s status bears watching as kickoff approaches.

“We’re taking it day by day,” head coach Mike McCarthy said. “We’ll see where everyone is on Friday.”
