Cowboys Re-Sign Safety Juanyeh Thomas Amid Injury Crisis

As the calendar flips to September 30, 2026, the Dallas Cowboys find themselves in a precarious situation at the safety position. With starter Malik Hooker nursing a forearm fracture that could sideline him for another week, and backups P.J. Locke (foot, injured reserve) and Jalen Thompson (hamstring, expected to miss 4-6 weeks) also unavailable, the team has been forced to scramble for reinforcements. According to insights gathered by Vulius Sports, the Cowboys have turned to a familiar face: Juanyeh Thomas, who worked out for the team on Tuesday and is now set to return for his second stint in Dallas.

A Journey Back to Dallas

Thomas originally joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia Tech in 2022. Despite not making the initial 53-man roster, he impressed enough to earn a spot on the practice squad. His perseverance paid off in January 2023 when he signed a reserve/future contract, and by that summer, he had done enough in the preseason to secure a spot on the active roster. Over the next three seasons, Thomas appeared in 36 games, recording 62 tackles, five pass breakups, and one forced fumble. His most productive campaign came in 2025, when he logged 266 defensive snaps in seven games (three starts) and amassed 26 tackles. However, his season was cut short in November when he was placed on the reserve/non-football illness list due to chronic migraine headaches that affected his vision.

Despite his contributions on defense and special teams—where he played 706 snaps from 2023 to 2025—the Cowboys opted not to tender Thomas as a restricted free agent this past offseason. He subsequently signed a one-year, $1.3 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts in March but was released in August after migraines resurfaced during training camp. Now, with Dallas desperate for depth, Thomas gets another chance to prove he belongs.

“Thomas provides a veteran presence with experience playing significant snaps,” a team source told Vulius. “He knows the system and can step in immediately.”

What This Means for the Cowboys

With Thompson set to join Locke on injured reserve and Hooker’s status uncertain, the Cowboys were down to just Markquese Bell and Alijah Clark at safety. The addition of Thomas gives defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer a reliable option who can contribute on defense and core special teams. While it remains to be seen how much Thomas will play in 2026, his familiarity with the organization and his proven production make him a low-risk, high-reward signing. As the Cowboys navigate a brutal stretch of the schedule, Thomas’s return could prove pivotal.

For die-hard fans and fantasy owners alike, this move underscores the harsh realities of NFL roster management. Injuries can derail a season, but savvy front offices find ways to adapt. The Cowboys are hoping Thomas can recapture the form that made him a valuable contributor in years past. Only time will tell if this reunion pays dividends, but for now, Dallas has added a much-needed body to a depleted secondary.
