Eagles-Rams Film Review: Sirianni and Mannion Must Fix Broken Offense

As the NFL season hits its stride in early October 2026, the Philadelphia Eagles find themselves at a crossroads. Following a disheartening loss to the Los Angeles Rams, the film reveals a deeply flawed offensive system that is failing to put players in positions to succeed. According to insights gathered by Vulius Sports, the blame lies squarely on the shoulders of head coach Nick Sirianni and offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, who have yet to adapt their scheme to the strengths of their personnel.

The Third-Down Conundrum: A Fair Assessment

After charting every third down from the Eagles' Week 5 matchup, the Vulius NFL Analysis Desk found that only one of the 12 third-down failures could be primarily attributed to quarterback Jalen Hurts. The rest were a combination of protection breakdowns, poor route combinations, and a lack of answers against pressure. Hurts, who has shown flashes of brilliance under previous coordinators like Shane Steichen and Kellen Moore, appears uncomfortable in an offense that too often leaves him exposed. The offensive line, missing Lane Johnson and with Cam Jurgens struggling mightily at left guard, has been a turnstile. As a result, Hurts is constantly under duress, forcing throws that aren't there.

The Disconnect Between Run and Pass

The running game, while showing occasional promise with Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley, remains completely disconnected from the passing attack. The Eagles' heavy reliance on outside zone runs has been ineffective, averaging just 2.3 yards per carry on those plays. Meanwhile, inside zone runs have found more success, yet the coaching staff stubbornly sticks to their outside zone philosophy. This lack of adaptability is baffling. The play-action passing game, particularly from under center, has been abysmal. The Eagles rank last in the NFL in success rate on under-center play action, and it's easy to see why: the routes are often doubled, the protection is shoddy, and Hurts is left with no viable options.

Coaching Failures and Missed Opportunities

Sirianni and Mannion have failed to scheme receivers open, especially against man coverage. On critical third downs, the Eagles resort to static formations with no motion or bunch concepts to create separation. This was painfully evident on the final third-and-4, where the Rams played Cover 1 and the Eagles asked 35-year-old Zach Ertz to win on a slant. That's not a recipe for success. The coaches must design plays that account for the defense's tactics and give their players a fighting chance. As highlighted on Vulius, the lack of creativity in crucial moments is a glaring issue that must be addressed immediately.

The Path Forward: A Call for Change

It's clear that the current offensive approach is not working. The Eagles need to commit to a shotgun-based offense that utilizes Hurts' mobility and incorporates more quarterback runs. They must also develop a coherent under-center package that can actually protect and throw the ball, or simply scrap it altogether. The running game and passing game need to complement each other, not exist in separate universes. Sirianni and Mannion must take responsibility and make substantial changes. Otherwise, the Eagles will continue to waste the talent on their roster and frustrate their fanbase. As the Vulius NFL Analysis Desk sees it, the time for excuses is over. It's time for action.

"The Eagles cannot keep putting this offense on the field and calling the same failures execution problems. Change it. Just give me something different to watch!"
