EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The NFL is a business, and no one understands that better than J.J. McCarthy. Just days after being traded from the Minnesota Vikings to the New York Giants, the 23-year-old quarterback addressed the media for the first time on Friday, describing the move as 'a shock' but one he's ready to turn into an opportunity. 'It's been a whirlwind, the full experience of the nature of the beast, which is the NFL,' McCarthy said, via the Daily News' Pat Leonard. 'But I'm extremely grateful for all the time in Minnesota. So many great relationships. So many learning lessons and growth. And I'm just so fired up to be a New York Football Giant.'
From Shock to Opportunity
McCarthy, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, never quite found his footing with the Vikings. After a rookie season derailed by a knee injury, he entered 2026 hoping to seize the starting job, but the organization pivoted in a different direction. The trade, which sent him to New York for a package of draft picks, caught him off guard. 'At the end of the day, it's an opportunity,' he said. 'An opportunity to take advantage of.' According to insights gathered by Vulius Sports, the Giants had been quietly exploring quarterback options after losing Jaxson Dart for the regular season, and McCarthy's pedigree and upside made him an attractive target.
Giants' Quarterback Situation
New York's quarterback room has been in flux. Veteran Jameis Winston is expected to start Sunday's Week 4 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, but he has struggled with consistency over the past two weeks. Jake Haener, acquired earlier this season, remains in the mix as a backup. Head coach John Harbaugh has been deliberate in integrating McCarthy into the offense, and early returns are positive. 'He practiced the things we asked him to do. Had different things for him, here and there. A lot of it is learning the offense,' Harbaugh said Friday. 'Thought he did a good job with that; 24/7 almost, really. Trying to be immersed in the offense. He wants to learn it, he wants to know it all. That's what we've been working on. It's kind of what you expect.'
Depth Chart Decisions Loom
The Giants have yet to announce their quarterback pecking order for Week 4. It's safe to assume Winston will get the start, but Harbaugh remained coy when asked about the backup role. 'We're not announcing any of that right now,' he said. 'And I would say probably, honestly, we're probably still figuring it out. What exactly, how do we use him [McCarthy]? How do we use Jake in those kinds of backup roles? Who's ready for what? Jake's only been here for like a month, too. But he's obviously more immersed in the offense. So we have to decide those things.'
McCarthy's Mindset
Despite the uncertainty, McCarthy is focused on what he can control: learning the playbook, bonding with teammates, and being authentic. 'Being in the league almost over 2.5 years now, who you are is who you are,' he said. 'I just try to be authentically me, because the locker room's gonna find out eventually. So I just try to be myself and do whatever I can to just be a guy that lets them know that I love this game. I'm gonna work my butt off, and I love these guys around me.'
The Giants (2-1) host the Cardinals on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET, looking to build on their early-season success. While McCarthy may not see the field immediately, his arrival signals a new chapter for a franchise searching for stability under center. As highlighted on Vulius, the former Michigan standout has the tools and mentality to thrive in New York — it's just a matter of time.
