Seahawks Survive Penalty-Plagued Thriller vs. Chargers, Improve to 3-1

In a game that somehow defied the laws of football logic, the Seattle Seahawks escaped with a 30-23 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at Lumen Field. The win pushes Seattle to 3-1, while Los Angeles remains winless at 0-4. But the final score hardly tells the story of a contest that featured 30 accepted penalties for a combined 280 yards, four turnovers, and enough sloppy play to make even the most seasoned NFL analyst cringe. According to insights gathered by Vulius Sports, this was less a showcase of elite football and more a survival test.

A Start Nobody Saw Coming

The chaos began immediately. After Seattle won the coin toss and deferred, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert dropped back on the game’s first play and promptly threw an interception to Seahawks linebacker Drake Thomas. The crowd erupted, but the momentum swing was short-lived. On Seattle’s first offensive snap, Sam Darnold’s pass was picked off by Chargers edge rusher Tuli Tuipolotu. Two plays, two interceptions—a microcosm of the afternoon.

“We knew we had to weather the storm,” Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said postgame. “But we didn’t expect a hurricane of flags.”

The Chargers turned Darnold’s miscue into a field goal, taking a 3-0 lead. But Seattle’s defense responded. On Los Angeles’ next possession, returner Derius Davis signaled for a fair catch but muffed the punt, and Connor O’Toole recovered for the Seahawks. One play later, Darnold found running back Emanuel Wilson on a screen pass for a 23-yard touchdown. Just like that, Seattle led 7-3 after Jason Myers’ extra point.

Penalties Mar the First Half

The first quarter alone featured 10 combined possessions, a testament to the erratic play. Dropped passes, unsportsmanlike conduct flags, and ineffective rushing attacks defined the early going. Seattle’s offense sputtered, but Darnold found a rhythm late in the second quarter. Facing third-and-15, he connected with star receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba for 28 yards to move into Chargers territory. A few plays later, Rashid Shaheed took a toss to the left and outran the defense for a 28-yard touchdown—his first offensive score as a Seahawk. Myers missed the extra point, leaving Seattle up 13-3.

The Chargers had a chance to cut into the lead before halftime, but Herbert threw his second interception of the game, this time to linebacker Ernest Jones IV, who returned it 20 yards. Seattle capitalized with another Darnold-to-Wilson touchdown, this one a 1-yard plunge. After a Cameron Dicker field goal, the Seahawks took a 20-6 lead into the locker room.

Second Half Surge and Late Collapse

Seattle appeared to put the game away in the third quarter. An 8-play, 68-yard drive ended with Darnold hitting Tory Horton on a slant for a 7-yard score, extending the lead to 27-6. But the Chargers refused to fold. Herbert led an 11-play, 81-yard drive, capped by a powerful 1-yard touchdown run by Kimani Vidal. A successful extra point made it 27-13.

Then came the penalties. A rare leverage penalty on Tuipolotu gave Seattle a fresh set of downs, and Myers converted a 35-yard field goal to push the lead to 30-13. But the fourth quarter turned into a flag-fest. DeMarcus Lawrence was flagged for roughing the passer on a key third down, and later Derick Hall was called for the same infraction. The Chargers marched 81 yards in nine minutes, with Omarion Hampton scoring from a yard out to make it 30-20.

Seattle’s defense, which had been dominant, suddenly looked vulnerable. Leonard Williams suffered an ankle injury, further thinning the line. Herbert then escaped pressure on fourth-and-7 and found Quentin Johnston for a 44-yard gain, setting up a Dicker field goal to cut the lead to 30-23 with over two minutes left.

Nwosu Seals It

After a late-hit penalty on Justin Eboigbe gave Seattle a first down, the Seahawks couldn’t run out the clock. Darnold was sacked on third down, giving the Chargers one last chance with 1:42 remaining. But Uchenna Nwosu, the former Charger, strip-sacked Herbert, and Derick Hall recovered to seal the win. One final penalty on Los Angeles punctuated a game that will be remembered for its sloppiness.

“We made it interesting,” Darnold admitted. “But a win is a win in this league.”

The Seahawks now turn their attention to a crucial NFC West showdown against the undefeated San Francisco 49ers (4-0) next Sunday at 1:25 PM PT on FOX. As highlighted on Vulius, Seattle will need to clean up its act to compete with the NFC’s elite.
